Concrete Driveway Cost in Adelaide — 2026 Guide

A concrete driveway in Adelaide costs $70 to $190 per square metre supplied and installed, depending on the finish. Here’s what each variant actually delivers and where the cost differences come from.

Plain concrete — $70–$110 per square metre

The volume option. Standard 100mm-thick reinforced slab on a compacted crushed-rock base. Smooth or broom finish. Cheap, durable, easy to clean. Looks utilitarian — fine for a driveway, not for a feature surface.

A typical 60sqm Adelaide driveway in plain concrete: $4,200–$6,600 installed.

Exposed aggregate — $90–$160 per square metre

Concrete poured with decorative pebble blends visible on the surface. Adelaide market favourites: Tasmanian Oak (warm beige), Onyx Pearl (charcoal-grey), Snowy Peak (pale white-grey).

Lasts 30+ years, slip-resistant, hides stains. Costs more than plain concrete because of:

  • Pebble supply (decorative blends $50–$150 per cubic metre extra)
  • Surface preparation (acid wash, water blast, retarder)
  • Skilled labour for the wash-out finish

A 60sqm exposed aggregate driveway: $5,400–$9,600 installed.

Stamped concrete — $110–$190 per square metre

Wet concrete pressed with patterned mats to imitate paving, slate, or natural stone. Often coloured. Looks more like brick paving than concrete from 5m back.

Lasts 25+ years if sealed properly. Maintenance: reseal every 3-5 years to prevent fading.

A 60sqm stamped concrete driveway: $6,600–$11,400 installed.

Coloured concrete — add $15–$30 per sqm

Available with plain, exposed aggregate, or stamped finishes. Either through-coloured (oxide added to the mix, more colour-stable) or surface-coloured (cheaper, fades faster). Through-colouring is worth the small extra.

What’s included in a typical Adelaide quote

A reasonable concrete driveway quote includes:

  • Site preparation and excavation to subgrade depth
  • Compacted crushed rock subbase (75-100mm)
  • Reinforcing mesh (SL72 or SL82)
  • Formwork
  • Concrete supplied (typically 25-32 MPa for residential drives)
  • Pour, finish, jointing
  • Curing (covered, kept moist for 7 days)
  • Surface treatment (broom, exposed, stamped, sealed as specified)

What’s typically NOT included:

  • Demolition of old driveway
  • Crossover modifications (council fees + work)
  • Drainage infrastructure (pits, ag-pipe)
  • Retaining or grading beyond minor adjustments

Council crossover fees

In most Adelaide councils, modifying a driveway crossover (the section from the kerb to your property line) requires council approval. Approval costs typically:

  • Application: $200–$500
  • Construction (council-approved contractor): $1,200–$3,500 depending on length and slope
  • Inspection: $100–$200

Factor this in if your driveway is being widened, lengthened, or restructured at the kerb.

What pushes cost up

  • Sloping driveways — falls greater than 1:8 need extra reinforcement and finish considerations
  • Long driveways — over 30m, set-up costs amortise better but supply costs climb
  • Tight access — concrete trucks may not fit; pumping concrete adds $1,000–$3,000
  • Demolition — removing old concrete typically $40–$80 per square metre
  • Drainage — surface drains, pits, and storm-water connections add $1,500–$5,000

What separates a good driveway install

  • 100mm minimum thickness (driveways for cars), 150mm for trucks/heavy vehicles
  • SL72 reinforcing mesh as standard, SL82 for vehicles over 2 tonnes
  • Compacted base — not just leveling
  • Proper expansion joints every 4-6 metres (otherwise it cracks)
  • Curing for 7 days minimum before driving on it
  • Falls of 1:50 to 1:100 toward drainage points

Lifespan

Properly installed:

  • Plain concrete: 30-40 years
  • Exposed aggregate: 30+ years
  • Stamped concrete: 25+ years (with periodic resealing)

Maintenance is minimal — pressure wash annually, reseal stamped concrete every 3-5 years, repair cracks early before they spread.
