Material options

Concrete sleeper ($250–$450/lin m) is the volume material — fast install, decent lifespan, looks industrial. Timber ($180–$320) is cheaper but degrades — H4 treated lasts 15-20 years. Block / besser ($350–$600) is the most durable. Natural stone is premium.

Engineering and council approval

In most SA councils, walls under 1m don’t need approval. Over 1m typically need engineering certification and development approval. Your trade should handle the lodgement; if they don’t mention it, ask.

Drainage is everything

Retaining walls fail when water builds up behind them. Ag-pipe along the back of the wall, draining to a pit or daylight; gravel backfill 300mm minimum; weep holes through block walls. Skip these and the wall is a five-year wall.
